Texas Fit Now Grant
Application for 2008-09
The Texas Education Agency will release the application and guidelines for the 2008-09 Texas Fit Now Grants on Tuesday, August 19. CLICK HERE for the grant opportunities website. The Education Service Centers have been notified of this release and will work closely with TEA and the districts in their region to field questions. Marissa Rathbone will work with the grants division to facilitate a video conference that will be broadcast through all Education Service Centers on August 27 to provide guidance and direction on the grant application to all eligible applicants. The application is due September 26, 2008 .

Facts to Know for the
2008-09 School Year
Beginning in 2001 with Senate Bill 19, Texas legislators have passed several laws that impact the physical education and health education in our schools. These include fitness testing (link to FITNESSGRAM info), specific minutes of physical activity for elementary and middle schools, Coordinated School Health programs (link to list on our Health page), and School Health Advisory Councils (link to info on Health page) and P.A.P.A. lessons for health classes (link to info on Health page). In 2007-08 school year, Texas teachers and students raised $7,490,373 for the American Heart Association heart disease research. Over 2,813 schools participated in the Jump Rope for Heart & Hoops for Heart programs.
